The European Parliament debated the workers’ right to be offline

The EP’s employment and social affairs committee on Wednesday proposed a report on workers’ right to be offline as part of its own initiative. According to PiS MEP Beata Szydło, however, this would be an example of over regulation.

EU Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights, Nicolas Schmit, has shown that the right to be offline is a very sensitive issue.

“Digitization creates new opportunities. New ways of working, living and consuming. It gives greater work efficiency and greater flexibility to employees and entrepreneurs” – he indicated.

German MEP Guido Reil, in turn, pointed out that no employee has to be at the employer’s disposal 24/7.

“It is very difficult to turn off during your free time. We all know this feeling when we are under constant pressure. You feel like you have to constantly check your e-mails, work-related news, worrying about being asked to react immediately. We’ve all been in this situation. when we received phone calls from work and we felt obligated to answer, even though we had time off “, said the rapporteur Alex Saliba, representative of the Social Democrat group.

“Now, in the pandemic, we have basically become prisoners of our phones, e-mails, computers. The Covid-19 pandemic has fundamentally changed the way we work. Therefore, we need to update our rules” – explained the preparation of the report, citing statistics showing that during the lockdown, one in three employees started working from home. And doing work from home doubles the likelihood of longer working hours.

“Workers suffer from side effects such as isolation, fatigue, burnout, pain in the eyes. (…) They suffer from exhaustion. It is important to prevent workers from invading work into their leisure time. I urge you to support this report of We are calling on the Commission to propose a directive on the right to be offline “, concluded the Maltese MEP.

EU Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights, Nicolas Schmit, has shown that the right to be offline is a very sensitive issue.

“Digitization creates new opportunities. New ways of working, living and consuming. It gives greater work efficiency and greater flexibility to employees and entrepreneurs. This issue is not only a social dimension, but also an economic one. We must maintain a balance between the development of digitization and the legal principles that protect people “- he concluded.
